Little amount of chlorine in water can kill bacteria's but if the amount is increased even a little bit it will start causing troubles.
If you are wondering:
Does Water Softener Remove Chlorine?

The answer is No, water softener doesn’t remove chlorine. Although in some cases it might remove a little bit of chlorine, the primary purpose of Water Softener is to remove Calcium and Magnesium from water.

Well this was just the tip of the iceberg, let's dive deep to understand why do we even need to remove chlorine from water and how to achieve it?

Why to remove Chlorine from Water?

Chlorination of water is done to kill bacterias in the water and it doesn’t affect our body and lifestyle if present in a small quantity and if you receive it very infrequently.

But if the water that you get at your home is heavily chlorinated for a continuous period of time. It can have a lot of harmful effects.

Chlorine water can cause following troubles:

  • Dry out skin and hair
  • Cause itching and rashes
  • Damage rubber gaskets
  • Kills healthy bacteria on skin and guts.
  • Bleaches clothes

In all, it's not good to consume chlorinated water on a continuous basis and for your household equipment.

Does Water Softener Remove Chlorine?

Many people have misconceptions that their water softener will remove chlorine from water.
But that is far from reality.

The purpose of a water softener system is to remove calcium and magnesium from your water and make it soft.

It achieves this by passing hard water (water containing high levels of calcium and magnesium) through water softener salt and exchanging them with sodium ions.

Although during this process it does trap a lit bit of chlorine as well but it has negligible effect.

How to Remove Chlorine from Water?
85% of America’s Water is classified as hard water so although Water Softener being a good investment it won’t remove chlorine from water.

So, how do you achieve it?

This is where a Reverse Osmosis System comes into play.
Reverse Osmosis works by passing water through a very thin semi-permeable membrane, so any mineral greater than that membrane can’t escape through and is flushed out.

So, the water that you get at the end is Pure water free of any harmful minerals.
